Cast Cows – A light show and a leaner show on the whole. Trade upkeeping with recent rates however looking less on paper with an increased percentage of dairy cows and less fed sorts included, the sale averaged 225ppk and £1394. British Blue heifers grabbed the top spots; JP Campbell, Cloves House sold one at 330ppk and £2125 whilst D Alderson, Bowl Turner impressed with one at 328ppk and £2571. A lovely Aberdeen Angus cow from D & M Lowes, Wilson House is well deserving of mention as she sold for £2235, as is a tidy Fleckvieh 41-month-old from the aforementioned D Alderson at 300ppk and £2193. Friesians topped at 236ppk and £1496 from GW & M Singleton & Sons, Farlington Grange.

Store Cattle – With new found fire in the belly of the prime ring last Thursday there is perhaps little wonder that the stores were in excellent form today. Five fantastic cattle sold at £2500 or more; three magical heifers from Five Houses, Yarm joined a cracking heifer from D Alderson, Bowl Turner however the top of the shop was a super strong Aberdeen Angus steer from Mark Johnson Racing, Park Farm which sold for £2540. A good offering of feeding bulls this week sold well again, top at £2240 was a tidy Limousin from J & F Hartley & Sons, Low Shipley. E Parsons of Newstead Grange followed with a nice pair of Simmental bulls at £2180 ahead of some strong continental crosses from local dairy farmers Messrs Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides Farm at £2140 and £2120.

Store Sheep – The store lamb trade remains excellent to average £114.35; short keep sheep in very short supply as a genuine show of long-term feeders all found new homes with consummate ease. Some vendors are appearing now with larger annual consignments and are safely up £15 per head on last year. Five fantastic Beltex lambs from B Lowson, Podge Hole led the way at £160 per head, Texels followed when M Hogg, The Brae sold five at £159 and A & R Thompson, Dimmingdale sold eight at £156. Mule lambs topped at £118, Suffolks £128, Dutch Spotted £146, Cheviots £136, Rough Fells £80 and Jacobs £90.
Feeding ewe trade looks absolutely ferocious, buyers for all shapes and sizes are queuing up to bid freely as the Monday ewe trade goes from strength to strength. A big show of numbers but a plainer show of quality averaged £122.20. Tups topped proceedings from BR & S Fell, Nafferton Farm with a best of £232 and another at £230. Half a dozen other vendors sold continental ewes over £200. A fairly lean show of Mule ewes averaged over £130 with a top of £148 and well over 100 horned ewes topped at £110 and averaged £66.30. Cheviot ewes to £148, Bluefaced Leicester to £170, Herdwick’s and Jacobs to £108 and Kerry Hills to £138.
