DFAM held its annual ‘Big Bank Holiday’ show & sale of store cattle, special thanks must go to the judge Mr Newbold, Flat House Farm, Chesterfield who went about his incredibly hard task, skilfully and with enthusiasm. With a quality show of steers & heifers before him the ‘Overall Champion’ and a worthy one at that, was a delightful Homebred 12mth old black heifer, flawlessly presented by regular vendor Jim Wilson, Calf Close Farm, she went on to sell to local producer EW Grieves, Oakdene for £2420. Many congratulations to the Wilson Family, and thank you for your support throughout the years, it’s inspiring to see you all reaping the benefit of your hard work. Reserve Champion was a Blonde D’Aquitaine steer shown by another family concern of regular Darlington Vendors – D Robson & Sons, Merryshields, with 3 generations proudly looking on – their 3 Steers took all 3 places in their class, with a Homebred Blonde D’ Aquitaine steer prevailing, selling for £2500 once again to EW Grieves, Oakdene. Many thanks to all who showed their cattle and of course to the buyers.

Cast Cows (69) More cows forward, in spite of there being a plainer show, trade was sharper on the week, returning a market average of 237ppk & £1535. Top price was 392ppk & 2657 for a young Limousin cow sold by GK KN & GJ Hird, Meadow View, TW Clark & Son, Frankland Park Farm sold the top grossing cow, weighing in at 815kg and 344ppk she went on to realise £2803. GW&M Singleton & Sons, Farlington Grange were top ppk & lead grossing native with a 30mth Hereford Heifer selling to 302ppk & £2639. An 843kg Friesian cow sold courtesy of AR&C Booth & Sons, Ltd, Village Farm to £1888, with another of his Friesians selling to a top 226ppk. Many more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage.

Store Cattle (260) With over 35 separate buyers ringside, trade was certainly at a premium today. Starting the sale with breeding cattle, W&J Herbert, Woodwell House sold 7 mostly aged cows with Limousin calves at foot to £2900 and an average of £1317 per life. A quality show of store bulls sold to a sharper trade with A Rothwell, Twizell Hall Farm selling a trio of Limousin Bulls to £2300 average £2113. JA&UM Fawcett, Manor House sold 7 wonderful Limousin Bulls to £2120. With store cattle very much in demand a run of 11 fantastic cattle from A Kitson & Son, Five Houses sold to £2560 average £2350. Robsons of Merryshields had a quality run of 11 Steers to average £2217. RN Foord & Son, Hill Top Farm presented 6 Steers to sell to an average of £2066.

Store Sheep
Bank holiday highs this week with something on offer for everyone with breeding shearlings hitting the day’s high topping for CM & TF Seymour with Texel X to £320 others to £285 and £270. Mule shearlings topped for High Greenbury Farms at £250 while pens of flock age ewes from D A Hinton & Son saw highs of £245. Pick of some gimmer lambs came in the form of 3 Pure Dutch Spotted lambs which made £260 twice and £250.
Feeding sheep saw a grand trade across the board for all goods forward as well with a top for Micheal Hogg with tups to £258, while D R Smith hit a top of £228. Plenty of continental ewes trading between £160-£190 for the best end with the leaner end trading between the £120-£140. Meated end of the mules selling between £130-£150 while the leaner end £90-£120. Horned ewes would top at £98 with others to £75.
Show and sale of store lambs saw the trade jump across the board for all goods forward when they all in average £119. The pick of the best of the Beltex lambs very easily placed with the judging left in the hands of William Tindale, finding his 1st prize pen of lambs from N G Beveridge selling to £214 while the second prize pen sold to £192. 3rd prize pen from M Radford hit a top of £157. Best end of the continental lambs regularly trading between £140-£160 barrier. The short keep store lambs would also see a lift in trade and sell away between £118-£125-£130 depending how they were bred with longer term projects all over the £100. There would be very few pens of lambs below £100 today, and the ones that were would be long term projects.
